I did not know GEM did that. I think that 1/3 of a century ago I may have known about this.
Fun wrinkle... DOS 5 and above include a SETVER command and driver so that DOS can lie about version numbers to apps. SETVER itself is keyed to specific DOS versions, and SETVER does not work on SETVER.
