I tried KDE erm around 20 years ago, and went 'Urgh' at how many resources were used in trying - and failing - to make it look pretty. I'm not the sort of person who wants animated otherwise blank bits in the menu bar, because they can.
These days, it's almost a lightweight DE compared to some of the others.
I have recently converted from Linux Mint MATE to its Cinnamon version and I can see why others like it.
