It's amazing that my mood depends so much on what my children remember to bring home from school.

(Yesterday, down two bus passes and a backpack, misery.
Today, all of their belongings, relief!)

Lidl food arrivals and disappearances

At the start of November last year, I couldn't find an Ian breakfast staple: Lidl's clone of Muller Light yogurts in our local store. OK, they are sometimes out of stock for a day or two.

That turned into a week, then two, and then I didn't see them in a couple of other Lidls either. OK, they've stopped doing them, grrr.

Fortunately, Aldi's basically identical clones continued to be in stock, but they don't have a nice loyalty scheme unlike Lidl.

Somewhat to my surprise, Lidl's version reappeared earlier this month. Slightly more expensive - I see I was paying £2.49 for the six pack in late October and they're £2.59 now - but I'm still glad to see them back.

When I abandoned muesli in favour of a wholewheat cereal in 2021 as part of that breakfast, following the big gall-bladder ouch, thanks to the fat content of the nut component, I did want some added sweetness. Around the same time, Lidl's 'Greek week' products included some fruit peel in syrup. The orange peel one was definitely the nicest of those, although the pomelo one was interesting, so since then I have been buying up multiple jars of it every time 'Greek week' comes along.

They've almost always been enough to last for the necessary two months, and the syrup is useful as a flavoured liquid sugar when doing other things.

This time, when 'Greek week' came around although they had the pomelo and the fig versions, the orange peel one had been replaced by an orange slice version. Oh no! You get fewer slices than you do bits of peel - I only have one at a time, unless they're particularly tiny - and the flesh of the orange isn't going to be as good as the peel, is it? I only got one jar to try.

It turns out it is, and I'll be back to getting more than one the next time.

Just over twenty years ago, I posted about my distress following a very nice mustard changing its receipe. We never did find a good replacement...

... until I noticed a single different looking jar in Lidl's regular mustard bits of the shelf. I look at the label and it uses cider vinegar (it calls it 'apple vinegar') and while it does have spirit vinegar, there's less of it than there is salt.

It turns out to be very very nice, and I went back a couple of days later to find the rest - it turned out to be part of 'taste of Deutschland' week even though it's made in Poland from Canadian mustard seed! Only 99p too.

The children are playing Roblox* together, and there are many joyous shouts of "I've found a tunnel, go in the yellow one! I'll check the door!" from the next room. Clearly having a lovely time.

*Safe, from my understanding, so long as they talk to nobody and spend no money.

For the first time this year I've left the office and it wasn't pitch black outside. Dark, but not *night*.

A brief history of Peter Mandelson

1998: Geoffrey Robinson loan affair

Peter Mandelson accepted a £373,000 unsecured interest-free loan from businessman and fellow minister Geoffrey Robinson to buy a house. He did not declare this loan or inform Prime Minister Tony Blair about it, or his permanent secretary. As the story emerged, he gave false and misleading statements to the Commons Committee.
This led to his resignation as Trade and Industry Secretary.

2001: The Hinduja passports affair

Peter Mandelson, then a government minister with responsibility for the Millennium Dome, denied any personal involvement in supporting successful UK passport applications made by Srichand and Gopichand Hinduja, super-wealthy businessmen brothers, who had expressed an interest in contributing to the costs of the Dome after their initial passport applications had been refused.
Mandelson is revealed to have lied, and is forced to resign for misleading conduct.

2009-10: Epstein relationship

Peter Mandelson downplays and minimises his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein in ways that were shown to be false around 2019-20, when press investigations revealed that he had had multiple meetings with Epstein, had stayed at his home, and had been introduced by Epstein to major figures in global finance. This relationship was shown to have continued after Epstein’s conviction.

2024: Keir Starmer appoints Peter Mandelson as British Ambassador to the United States.

I came in the front door to find Sophia lying there waiting for me.

(She leapt up, gave me a hug, demanded to know what was for dinner, and then lay back down to watch videos.)

Self-drafted Half-Circle skirt, v.3

So I made another half-circle skirt, identical to v.1 and v.2, but in a 100% polyester micro-velvet. It's a soft, plush, non-stretch, deep black (when not over-exposed) velvet. I had high hopes for this fabric. The first issue is that it comes in a narrow width, so I could only fit the pattern pieces in one orientation, and actually had to go buy a second longer length to fit them. Also, the twice turned hem turned out thicker than ideal. But mostly this fabric is a static electricity/cling nightmare. And the (half) fullness of this skirt means the fabric is constantly rubbing against itself. I have bought a slip, and ordered a petticoat, to see if they can make this more wearable. But needless to say I have scrapped the other projects I had in mind for this fabric.

Prompted by something someone said...

If you have central heating, is it

a) on a timer?

b) turned on / off manually or via a thermostat?

c) controlled by an app?
